STAND-UP COMEDY - INTRODUCTION TO STAND-UP COMEDY

Level SUP-LEVEL101

The Level 101 Introduction to Stand-Up Comedy class focuses on giving students a broad understanding of the flavors of stand-up comedy, joke structure and the process needed to properly brainstorm and organize material for joke development. This is a writing-intensive class and meets every other week to allow time for material development.

Our stand-up comedy program for adults (17+) takes students from the fundamentals of comedy writing all the way through creating your own standup comedy set. With our supportive instruction, anyone can do stand-up.

Successful stand-up comedy stems from an engaging, positive and constructive writing environment, where students are encouraged to take risks, explore and communicate what they think is fun about the world.  Comics in our program build confidence in the choices they make, in themselves, and in their creative ideas both on paper and on stage. Our stand-up comedy philosophy is rooted in improvisation and coached by an experienced faculty of performers, writers and working comics.

Develop yourself as a solo comedic performer by writing and workshopping your own material. By understanding how earlier stand-up comics evolved, students experiment outside their comfort zone and experiment until discovering their own unique style.

This course is set up as an ensemble class. You will not be one-on-one with the instructor. Instead, the improv “Yes, And” mentality must be taken into play. You will be performing your jokes to the class and they will give you feedback and expect the same from you.

Prerequisite: No experience needed.
